چکیده
Idiopathic scoliosis (crooked spine) can be a crippling disease in humans. A common form primarily affects adolescent girls. There is clear evidence that idiopathic scoliosis is inherited. However, in humans, the pattern of inheritance is not clear. Several years ago, Dr. L. W. Taylor of this department (Berkeley campus) developed an inbred strain of chickens in which up to 50 percent of the birds developed scoliosis. Subsequent research revealed a number of striking similarities between scoliosis in these birds and man. A more extensive study, with support from an Orthopaedic Research and Education grant and an NIH grant, is underway. Cooperating with the UCD Departments of Orthopaedics, Animal Science and Nutrition, we have found that, in the scoliotic strain, the first spinal curves are detected after birds reach four weeks of age, usually between the fifth and sixth weeks. As these birds mature, progressively more severe curves develop until spontaneous fusion of the thoracic vertebrae occurs. The incidence of curved spines in sexually mature adults is now about 55 percent and is more frequent in males than in females. Thus, in chickens as well as in humans, the homogametic sex is more prone to scoliosis. Our work also shows that abnormalities of growth and development of the spine are not the primary cause of scoliosis, nor is simple muscle imbalance involved.

Comparison of Respiratory Muscle Electromyography between Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis and Healthy Subjects
Purpose: Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal deformities that affect chest wall mechanics. Scoliosis results in ventilator disorders and respiratory muscle weakness. However, the mechanism of these disorders is still unknown. The main objective of this study was to identify the intensity of respiratory muscles activity in patients with idiopathic scoliosis compare with healthy indi...

Introduction: The differential diagnosis of idiopathic and syringomyelia associated scoliosis is important because corrective surgery for scoliosis associated with syringomyelia prior to management of syringomyelia can be dangerous. There are important imaging indicators for diagnosis of syringomyelia associated with scoliosis. A few of these indicators have been assessed in our study. Methods...
متن کاملEvaluation of Patient Outcome and Satisfaction after Surgical Treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Using Scoliosis Research Society-30
Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) may lead to physical and mental problems. It also can adversely affect patient satisfaction and the quality of life. In this study, we assessed the outcomes and satisfaction rate after surgical treatment of AIS using scoliosis research society-30 questionnaire (SRS-30). Methods: We enrolled 135 patients with AIS undergoing corrective surgery...
متن کاملDetermination of different types of scoliosis based on the apex of the spinal curve in adolescents
Background: Scoliosis is a Greek word for crocked and is an often referred as an shape side to side curves of spine. The spinal column twists and rotates creating an uneven shoulder and a rib hump, which can lead to breathing problems as the heart and lungs became compressed. Early detection, can increase the chances of successful treatment. The treatment of scoliosis varies depending on severi...

Background and Objective: Patients with idiopathic scoliosis often have hypokyphosis in their spines, but some patients may exhibit an increase in kyphosis instead. The aim of this study was to define the effect of the kyphosis on the flexibility of scoliotic curves. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 cases of idiopathic scoliosis were studied with standing posteroanterior and lateral radiog...
